Is Windows XP good enough for an FTP server?

My company is getting a new FTP server. Is XP sufficient, or is the cost of Win2003Server still justified for merely running an FTP server on this machine?

Also- what is the best practice for FTP… Do i really need RAID1 for OS & RAID5 for data? Thats how our main servers will be setup, but i’m not sure its necessary on something as simple as an FTP machine.

is it secure to put win xp on static IP?

I need to expose this machine as FTP to around 500 users. So,Could anybody tell me whether to put OS as Windows XP?
Windows 2003 server/Windows 2000 has some problems with my machine.

I want to use FTP and Windows XP Pro’s firewall, but I have a problem. What am I missing?

I have a FTP server running on a separate computer. Its operation is verified.

I wrote a .cmd file to use with a batch to automate downloading files to the Windows XP Pro computer. The firewall noticed I was using FTP the first time I tested, and it asked if I wanted to Block or UnBlock. I chose UnBlock. I continued and I was able to connect to the server in FTP, but when I tried to download files, it reported errors and sat trying to download instead of actually downloading.

I suspected the firewall, so I disabled the firewall and the files transfer fine. I have left instructions with the user about disabling the firewall, doing the FTP transfer and then re-enabling it, but I only want that to be a temporary work around.

Windows XP Pro experts, tell me what I am missing to make this work while the firewall stays up. I’m sure the user will forget to put the firewall back up and that will cause problems I don’t want.

How do you clear the network places history in Windows XP?

I’m trying to add a new FTP network place in Windows XP. But the problem is, there was an old connection to the same server only a different account. Even though I delete the old one and creted a new one with the new account, when I double click the icon, it still logs me in to the old account (it’s obviously cached somewhere). I don’t have admin access to the server otherwise I’d delete the old account. So anyone know if you can clear the network places Internet connections history?
